I’m Not In Love
Don’t worry. Everything is cool. Adam and I are fine.
I’m referring to the 10cc song “I’m Not In Love,” which was written by my new friend Graham Gouldman (and bandmate Eric Stewart.) “I’m Not In Love” is one of those songs. It takes every one of us back to a bittersweet memory of somebody somewhere. Denial of feelings. Someone denying themselves to us.
I met Graham recently in London when he was kind enough to lend me a suede guitar strap which would prevent the instrument from sliding around on my back when I performed at The Other Songs Concert. Lovely Dude. On top of his history with 10cc he has quite the catalog of songs that were recorded by other bands — Herman’s Hermit’s “No Milk Today,” The Hollies “Bus Stop,” the Yardbirds “For Your Love.”
I was delighted upon returning from my travels to be invited by my neighborhood friend and pop culture journalist David Wild to be a guest on his Naked Lunch Podcast which he co-hosts with the hilarious Phil (“Somebody Feed Phil”) Rosenthal. And, David said ... there’d be one other guest on the show: Graham Gouldman. Quite the coincidence!
And so … I went to Larchmont and Graham Zoomed in. The four of us indulged ourselves in our favorite subject: songs and songwriting.
David reiterates how I turned a bad mood and a cigarette at a red light into a life changing hit song — "Bitch." 🌟😂 And Graham takes us into the studio (in 10 cc’s case a laboratory) and pulls back the curtain on the making of this song and those magical multi-layered vocals.
