Pam

This is my friend Pam.

Pam and I were 2 out of about 6 writers who were signed to London’s Hit & Run Music Publishing in the early 90s. Geoffrey Williams, Julian Lennon and Phil Collins were also on the roster. Good Company.

Hit & Run nurtured us. They didn’t give up on a song they believed in even if it took years for them to place it. They got me on a Pretenders album. Miracle.

After years of nurturing, Pam wrote “Genie in a Bottle” which Christina Aguilera took to #1 all over the world and I was waiting in the wings with “What A Girl Wants. We were book-ends. Hit & Run was very happy. They stuck with us and we came through. They signed us before we had hits!

It was a song-pitching gold rush back then. You didn’t automatically get on records but if it were a game of musical chairs it was like there were 20 writers in the room and 5 chairs. So once in a while you got to sit down. Now it’s like there are 100 writers and two chairs. 😳

What does a girl do after the gold rush, and when digital streaming has decimated songwriting royalties? Well, she gets involved in advocating for creators rights, she mentors and she continues on her personal creative journey. I can relate.

Pam and I go a little bit down memory lane here with “Genie” —26-years-later and also talk about what she has brewing in her current box of endeavors.

There are a lot of ego maniacs and jerks in this business. Pam is one of the angels. I hope you enjoy our chat. 🧞‍♂️🧞‍♀️🧞‍♂️🧞‍♀️ (If you’re on a cell you might wanna turn it sideways. 😳)

And let’s not forget Singing “Genie” to Karen Bass ….
