Love It If We Made It
This blog is interactive so get your earbuds or AirPods or headphones ready. Thank you.
I’ll wait….
Ok…
Here goes…
I’ve heard it said that there’s no good music out there. Not true. You gotta dig deeper than the mainstream. Or maybe some of us grew up and got happy — no longer depend on music to identify or save us. Fair enough. It happens to the best of us. Thing is if you want it, there is music out there that’s saving people. It saves me sometimes. Actually it saves me quite often.
“Love It If We Made It” is a track off The 1975’s album A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships, released in July 2018. But have you heard it? I hadn’t either. Though admittedly I’m always a little late to the party.
Upon seeing the title for the first time, I thought it was about hooking up. Wouldn’t you? My second guess would have been that is was about dreaming of success. Neither.
My college freshman godsons Josh and Shane Cronin, of the up and coming band Sir, Please (3rd and 4th in the image above), turned me onto the song when we were hanging out shooting the sh*t about our favorite bands. It warms my heart that they don’t think I’m too ancient to have this conversation.
We agreed on the latest efforts from Foster The People and Tame Impala. But I couldn’t believe they never even heard of Phoenix. Dudes! Get it together.
I was already familiar with The 1975. I had heard their last album concisely titled Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It. But after a listen or 2 I kind of forgot about it because there is just SO MUCH CONTENT out there. I can’t keep up. And I try, believe me. I want to have an opinion when Billie Eyelash, I mean Eilish, comes up in conversation.
Anyway…Josh and Shane dragged me over to the iMac in the kitchen and said I had to listen to “Love It If We Made It” while I watched the video. Really? Shouldn’t a song stand on its own without visual stimuli? But I entertained their wish. I was open minded though my hands were authoritatively on my hips. Go ahead. Let her rip.
Check it out before I continue. Full screen please. Then we can discuss.
Call me crazy. I felt like I left the planet and came back down to earth. All my senses sated. I didn’t need to hear another song for a week. In fact, I listened to “Love It” over and over driving home. Dissecting. Analyzing. Obsessing. I was especially euphoric because I’d been feeling like I couldn’t take another song about Bitches and Hos. Even the GRAMMYs had the Bitches and Hos covered. Am I out of touch?
My godsons, always in search of stand-out music, report that at USC Frat parties all anyone wants to dance to is Die Antwoord’s “Rich Bitch.” My apologies if you love this song. Just not my cuppa tea. (Admittedly, pretty hypocritical from the girl who wrote a song called “Bitch.” But that was different! )
“Love It If We Made It” is about the survival of humanity. That’s a huge task to take on. It’s almost impossible to write a socially-conscious culturally-resonant anthem without being cheesy or preachy. That’s why we don’t hear them much. In addition, not many bands are brave enough to put forth something so bold in a medium where algorithms (paint by numbers) rule.
To me “Love It If We Made It” is a modern “Ball of Confusion,” “Revolution,” “Imagine.” But it will never be as big as those songs because THERE’S SO MUCH CONTENT OUT THERE!
But there is magical stuff. Needles in haystacks. If you’re not inclined to surf SoundCloud ask your kids, your students, your nieces and nephews. They know where to find it. They’ll enlighten you.
Thank you my godsons for this needle. Let’s have another powwow soon. I have no doubt that some day you and the guys will write a “Love It If We Made It” too. And you know I’ll be blogging about it right here when you do.
PS. If you’re more the singer-songwritery type check out this song by the same band which follows the previous one on the same album. It’s Dope. 😳
Love It If We Made It
We're fucking in a car, shooting heroin
Saying controversial things just for the hell of it
Selling melanin and then suffocate the black men
Start with misdemeanors and we'll make a business out of them
And we can find out the information
Access all the applications
that are hardening positions based on miscommunication
Oh Fuck your feelings
Truth is only hearsay
We're just left to decay
Modernity has failed us
And I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
And poison me daddy
I've got the Jones right through my bones
Write it on a piece of stone
A beach of drowning three-year-olds
Rest in peace Lil Peep
The poetry is in the streets
Jesus save us
Modernity has failed us
And I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
And I'd love it if we made it
And I'd love it if we made it
And I'd love it if we made it
I'd love it if we made it
Tell me something I didn't know
Consultation
Degradation
Fossil fuelling
Masturbation
Immigration
Liberal kitsch
Kneeling on a pitch
"I moved on her like a bitch"
Excited to be indicted
Unrequited house with seven pools
"Thank you Kanye, very cool"
The war has been incited and guess what?
You're all invited
And you're famous
Modernity has failed us
And I'd love it if we made it
And I'd love it if we made it
And I'd love it if we made it
Tell me something I didn't know
And I'd love it if we made it
And I'd love it if we made it
And I'd love it if we made it
And I'd love it if we made it
